How does yard and house drainage impact the security of my foundation?

Diverting water from your home is the first line of defense when maintaining a stable foundation. As you prepare for April Showers this year, make sure your home is protected with proper drainage systems. Liquids take the path of least resistance, so it is your job to proactively channel water away from our home.

Efficient gutters reduce the water draining down the sides of your home and along your foundation. If you do not have a gutter system, it is imperative you have one installed. If your gutters or downspouts are clogged or damaged, have them repaired. Without an effective system in place, water is not redirected away from your home and foundation. Better to spend a little bit of money now with preventative measures than thousands of dollars later on a foundation repair.

Another way to keep water directed away from your home and, therefore, away from your foundation is to make sure your landscape is sloped away from your house. Allow no options for water to pool near or against your home. The grade slope of your yard needn’t be steep, just angled enough to guide the water in the opposite direction of your home.

If, despite your best efforts, you continue having water pool in areas, installing French Drains can be an effective solution to channeling it properly. As a homeowner, inspecting your system before the start of our rainy season is a wise decision.
